Tooth Grinding Treatment in Idle

Do you often wake up with headaches?

Sore jaws that don’t seem to have an obvious reason? Maybe your teeth feel unusually sensitive in the morning, or your partner has mentioned hearing you grind your teeth at night.

This condition, known as tooth grinding or bruxism, is surprisingly common and can have significant effects on your oral health if left untreated. Tooth grinding treatment in Idle can help you resolve this issue, preserving your tooth enamel whilst being pain-free.

What is tooth grinding treatment?

Tooth grinding treatment focuses on addressing the problems caused by bruxism. This can include the use of custom-made mouthguards or splints, along with other tailored solutions to protect your teeth and relieve symptoms.

What is tooth grinding?

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, happens when you clench or grind your teeth unconsciously, either while sleeping or during the day. Although it might seem harmless, repeated grinding can cause:

  • Enamel wear and tear: The protective layer of your teeth gradually erodes, exposing the sensitive layers underneath.

Personalised tooth grinding treatments

If you recognise any symptoms, it’s important to get a tailored treatment plan from your dentist. Here are some of the options we provide:

Custom-made night guards

These personalised night guards are one of the most effective solutions for bruxism. They fit perfectly over your teeth, acting as a barrier to prevent grinding and protect your enamel. Made using 3D digital scans, they are designed to be comfortable, durable, and easy to use. Unlike generic store-bought guards, these are crafted specifically for your unique dental profile.

Stress or anxiety often triggers teeth grinding. We can guide you on relaxation strategies or recommend counselling services if necessary. Small changes, like avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, can also reduce grinding.

If your bruxism is caused by misaligned teeth or ageing-related bite changes, we can make precise adjustments to balance your bite. This minimises stress on your jaw and helps prevent grinding.

  • Cracked or chipped teeth: Continuous grinding can weaken your teeth, leading to visible damage over time.
  • Jaw pain: Bruxism can strain the muscles in your jaw, sometimes resulting in temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • Headaches: Many people with bruxism wake up with tension headaches, especially in the morning.

While conservative approaches like stress management or lifestyle changes are effective for mild cases, more advanced bruxism might require dental adjustments or medications, such as muscle relaxants. It’s always a good idea to consult a dentist to explore the best treatments for teeth grinding for your specific situation.

Tooth grinding signs

Many people don’t realise they grind their teeth until a dentist points out the signs. These may include:

  • Grinding teeth causes jaw pain without a clear cause.
  • Grinding teeth causes the gum pain unrelated to infections or cavities.
  • Grinding teeth causes receding gum without the usual buildup of tartar or stains.
  • Grinding teeth causes unexplained tooth sensitivity.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, bruxism can be effectively managed and eventually cured with treatments like custom-fitted mouthguards, bite adjustments, and stress-reducing techniques. Lifestyle changes, such as practising mindfulness or meditation, can also play a big role in recovery.

Absolutely. Teeth grinding can be treated through various methods, including dental devices, corrective procedures, stress management therapies, medications, and lifestyle adjustments. Consulting a dentist is the best way to find the right solution for your specific needs.

Not necessarily. While stress is a common cause, other factors—such as sleep disorders, misaligned teeth, or certain lifestyle habits—can also contribute to bruxism. A professional evaluation can help identify the root cause in your case.

I hadn't been to the dentist in a very long time. I came to Taylored Dental after hearing positive experiences from a family member who has been with them for some time.
I needed quite a lot of work doing which I was apprehensive about but Kat was amazing. She was so patient and explained everything to me as she was doing it. I felt completely at ease and wondered why I hadn't visited sooner!
At my final appointment from my treatment plan, they presented me with some gorgeous flowers which was such a lovely touch.
Dare I say, I'm looking forward to my check up in 6 months!
Thank you Taylored Dental 🤍

This review is a little delayed (February 2021)as I did not realise I could leave it via Google! ( I’m not on FB) I have been with TDC for years now since they took over from my previous dentist. Last year I decided to have whitening and composite veneers on my two front teeth. I cannot say enough about how great they are! Haider was brilliant and my teeth look so natural lots of people have not even noticed! Of course I have also had ‘usual’ treatments too including root canal work. All the staff and of course Haider were so friendly and kind- no pain and carried out very professionally. I cannot recommend this practice highly enough. 😊
