Your Child’s First Dental Visit: A Guide for Shipley Parents

When should you take your child to the dentist for the first time, and how do you make it feel like a positive experience rather than a battle? Here is a practical guide for parents in Shipley, Idle, Baildon and across Bradford.

When should the first visit happen?

The official guidance from the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry is to bring your child by their first birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing, whichever comes first.

Most parents do not actually bring their child until they are 2 or 3, and for most children that is fine. The earlier visits have two real benefits: spotting anything unusual early and getting your child used to the surgery before they have any reason to feel nervous.

What happens at a first visit at TDC Shipley?

For a young child, the appointment is deliberately gentle:

  1. A short tour. The child sees the chair, the lights and the equipment. We point things out in friendly language they will understand.
  2. The “knee to knee” examination for very young children. Parent and dentist sit knee to knee. The child lies back into the dentist’s lap for a quick look.
  3. A count of teeth. We count what we can see, point out anything we are watching and answer any questions.
  4. Practical advice for you. Brushing technique, fluoride, weaning off bottles, the snack patterns that drive decay.

The whole appointment lasts 15 to 20 minutes and we go entirely at the child’s pace.

How to make the first visit go well

A few things that genuinely help:

  • Avoid the word “hurt” in any conversation about the appointment beforehand. The word plants the idea that pain is on the table. Talk about it as a visit to count their teeth.
  • Bring a favourite toy. Familiar objects ease nervousness.
  • Pick a morning slot. Children are rarely at their best in the late afternoon.
  • Read a book about the dentist in the week before. Familiar imagery helps.
  • Let an older sibling go first while your younger child watches. The “big kid” example is a powerful motivator.
  • Stay calm yourself. Children read parental nerves instantly.

What does it cost?

At TDC Shipley, children’s check-ups follow the same fee structure as adults, but most families take out a monthly plan that covers routine care for the whole household.

If treatment is ever needed, prices are quoted in advance and we never start without your consent and a clear understanding of what is involved.

What to expect as your child grows

A rough guide:

  • Age 1 to 3: gentle introduction, count of teeth, advice for parents
  • Age 3 to 6: full check-up, X-rays usually not needed yet, fluoride varnish twice a year
  • Age 6 to 12: monitoring of adult teeth coming through, fissure sealants where helpful
  • Age 12+: routine check-ups, occasional X-rays, orthodontic assessment if needed

We start discussing orthodontic possibilities from around age 9 or 10. NHS braces are available for under-18s with significant alignment issues. Private aligners are an option from late teens onwards.

How to prevent decay in children’s teeth

Tooth decay in children is one of the most common reasons under-5s are admitted to hospital in the UK, and it is almost entirely preventable. The main drivers:

  • Frequent sugary drinks, including fruit juice and squash
  • Snacking on starchy or sugary foods between meals
  • Going to bed with a bottle
  • Not brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste

A first dental visit is the best opportunity for a conversation about what is working and what could shift.

What is different about kids’ dentistry at TDC Shipley?

I hadn't been to the dentist in a very long time. I came to Taylored Dental after hearing positive experiences from a family member who has been with them for some time.
I needed quite a lot of work doing which I was apprehensive about but Kat was amazing. She was so patient and explained everything to me as she was doing it. I felt completely at ease and wondered why I hadn't visited sooner!
At my final appointment from my treatment plan, they presented me with some gorgeous flowers which was such a lovely touch.
Dare I say, I'm looking forward to my check up in 6 months!
Thank you Taylored Dental 🤍

I suffer from severe anxiety, so going anywhere is very stressful. Everyone did their best to make me feel at ease. My new full set of dentures are spot on. A smile with natural looking teeth. Thank you for your professional, caring service. Thank you.

This review is a little delayed (February 2021)as I did not realise I could leave it via Google! ( I’m not on FB) I have been with TDC for years now since they took over from my previous dentist. Last year I decided to have whitening and composite veneers on my two front teeth. I cannot say enough about how great they are! Haider was brilliant and my teeth look so natural lots of people have not even noticed! Of course I have also had ‘usual’ treatments too including root canal work. All the staff and of course Haider were so friendly and kind- no pain and carried out very professionally. I cannot recommend this practice highly enough. 😊
